Hours of Work: 37.5 hours per week, including evenings, weekends and public holidays as required for religious services and festivals.

Salary

Job Purpose

To support the religious activities and objectives of the temple by conducting Hindu worship and ceremonies, assisting in the delivery of religious education, promoting Hindu culture and traditions, and providing spiritual support to devotees and the wider community.

The post holder will undertake religious duties and activities under the direction of the Temple Management Committee and in accordance with Hindu customs, traditions and practices.


Main Duties and Responsibilities
Religious Worship and Ceremonies

    • Perform and assist with daily temple worship, including:

        • Puja
        • Aarti
        • Abhishekam
        • Bhajan and Kirtan
        • Havan and Yagna ceremonies
        • Prepare and maintain temple shrines and religious items required for worship.
        • Conduct religious ceremonies and rituals for devotees, including
        • Naming ceremonies (Namkaran)
        • House warming blessings (Griha Pravesh)
        • Wedding ceremonies
        • Funeral and memorial prayers
        • Other Hindu religious observances.
      • Religious Festivals and Events
        • Assist in organising, planning and delivering all major Hindu festivals and religious celebrations, including:
        • Diwali
        • Navratri
        • Janmashtami
        • Maha Shivaratri
        • Ram Navami.
    • Support the preparation of religious programmes and community events throughout the year.

Teaching and Community Activities
Deliver classes and educational sessions on Hindu beliefs, traditions and cultural practices.
Teach devotional songs, prayers and religious customs to children and adults.
Assist in the development of youth and community engagement programmes.
Promote Hindu values and encourage participation in temple activities.

Pastoral and Community Support
Provide spiritual support and guidance to devotees.
Visit devotees in their homes, hospitals or care settings where religious support is requested.
Support community members during important religious and family occasions.
Encourage community cohesion and participation in temple activities.

Temple Support Duties
Assist with maintaining the cleanliness and sanctity of temple worship areas.
Prepare materials and arrangements necessary for religious ceremonies and festivals.
Maintain records of ceremonies and temple activities as required.
Support volunteers and assist trustees with the delivery of religious programmes.


Person Specification
Essential Criteria

    • Demonstrable knowledge and experience of Hindu religious practices, rituals and traditions.

    • Ability to conduct Hindu worship and ceremonies in accordance with established customs.

    • Knowledge of Hindu scriptures and devotional practices.

    • Ability to communicate effectively with devotees and the wider community.

    • Ability to work flexibly, including evenings, weekends and religious festivals.

    • Good interpersonal and community engagement skills.

Desirable Criteria

    • Formal training or education in Hindu religious studies or priesthood.

    • Experience working within a Hindu temple or religious organisation.

    • Ability to teach Hindu religious and cultural education programmes.

    • Experience working with diverse communities.
